When did Ani start hers, and how did she do them if anyone knows.
see, I had dreads back in high school and now years later I want them back. Just curious as to what anyone knows about hers to help me along. How long has she had them, did she start with braids or did she just show up with them one day? I've seen picures and it dosent really give me a timeline. I love how hers look compaired to others, so I was curious.
Thanks for any and all assistance

Ani doesn't have them anymore.
I'm sure there has to be someone on here that has dreads themselves that could help you out. I doubt anyone knows exactly how ani did hers.
I believe it's just basically kind of not combing yr hair and twisting it all the time. Look around on the internet. I'm sure there are sites that would tell you how. |

it all depends on your hair type. If you're of an ethnic background, natural dreads aren't very hard to do. If you're of excessively american background, chances are, you will need some wax product to get started. You don't have to stop washing your hair to have dreads!

for my dreads i use dreadheadhq.com they have great products and the best BEST waxes anywehere on this wonderful planet. if you are white i do sugest ordering thier kit, it has everything that you need. it not only has that great wax but it has the best dreading comb that i have been able to find as well..
good luch with your little dreadies.
also the first time that ani had her dreads in was after she had tose crazy extensions in her hair. i could be wrong, but i think that the first stages of her dreads circa 1998 she dreaded in her extensions with the rest of her hair. when you do dread you loose about 1/3 of your hair length, so that was a easy way for hers to be super loooong! |

I'm approaching my 1000th post and given that at December last year I only had 100 posts since I joined in Feb of 2004 it has been a big year!
Ok that was totally off topic. |

DON'T USE WAX!
I regretted it so much...not worth it.
I've seen photos and video of Ani from 1998-2002...it looks like she just had shaggy hair that was not combed and then seperated into locks and kinda knotted from there.
Time and patience will make them look better, and no matter what anybody says, anyone's hair will dread! _________________ http://redletteryear.multiply.com

USE WAX.
Dreadheadhq.com is a great resource.
And I think Ani did braid. . .for some reason I think I've seen a picture (maybe on TRUST?) and you can see the braided pattern in her dreads. |

ha ha ha,
yeah it seems like this is turning into a" to wax or not to wax" debate, so i'll add my view...
DON'T WAX!!!!
i regretted it too. it does help them along(i have DEAD STRAIGHT hair) but for years to come it's still there and all the dirt sticks to the wax so you will have ten times more dirt in your dreads...
also, it is a TOTALLY FALSE notion that having dreads=not washing your hair! it is sooo important to keep your scalp washed at least otherwise it all gets so scoddy and people with bad smelling dreads gives dreadlocks a bad name in that way (shame on them!)
really good one to know for washing is rosemary and teatree(both have natural cleaning and antiseptic properties). if you can score them as plants, boil them up in a big pot of h2o and lotsa oil comes out of the plants. then strain off the liquid only, let it cool and voila..wash your whole head in a bucket of this awesome shampoo. if you can't get the plants, use hot water with essential oils of the two. sea and river water also do wonders. nasty, chemical, standard smampoo=not recommended.
the platting/braiding thing does work quite well if your hair is reluctant to dread. i braded some of my smaller dreads together and then noticed they dreaded into one really well at the roots)eventually you can undo the braid at the bottom and work it into dreadlock too
and while i'm on it, i also advocate AVOIDING twisting if your hair is quite straight cos then the hair just stays twisted, rather than dreaded.
at some point ani had braid extensions(some were blue) within her shorter dreading hair (see the photos on this site 'high times magazine' on page two of albums). your hair will always shrink a lot when it dreads.
as for the look of hers, i always say: everyones hair dreads totally uniquely and we dont get to choose how we want them(mostly this applies if you're doing it au naturel)...they will just be as they will be!
wow, i was only gonna write about the wax! wooops...lotsa experience i guess |

I'm dreadless too, but that shampoo does sound awesome!!!!
One time i was camping for a week and had no way of washing my hair. It was so hot that i would dip my hair under water and then just tie it up; it started to dread on it's own. By the time i was on the way home, I had the beginnings of dreads. I washed and combed the fuck out of it to get it back to it's original state. |

I've no idea how useful this is, but when I had fake dreads put in in Kathmandu (made with someone else's hair knotted into my own dreaded hair which is a bit eeew but I'm not sure why) I found that the kind of hair oil they sell in Nepal and India is really good for keeping it in check.
If you've got an Indian community near you you should be able to find it.
I once made a shampoo out of Rosmary plant and it made my hair really oily. It shined, but in a greasy kind of way. Don't overdo the Rosemary. |

Wow! I was on here yesterday and there was like one comment back, now theres all this
Thanks for the info, I should be getting my happy dreadies back in about a month. Gotta let some parts of my hair get a little longer. I will be using wax, it's worked well with me before, but I kinda like the debate going on. What are the major complaints of waxing?? Just dirtier? |

wax:
two kinds. beeswax, and petroleum-based. beeswax is an organic material and it will rot in your hair. petroleum-based will seal water in and result in mildew. both smell bad because of this. both will attract dirt.
when we put my dreads in, we sectioned into one-inch-ish squares, braided the sections, and then unbraided them one at a time, backcombed, teased, and palm rolled - not twisting. if you don't unbraid and backcomb, you just end up with fuzzy braids. square sections produce round dreads.
i washed about once a week with dr. bronner's tea tree soap. i made a spray out of rosemary, lavender, and peppermint tea, sea salt, and tea tree oil. rosemary is antiseptic and all around good for hair, lavender also antiseptic, peppermint good smelling, sea salt is cleansing and will help your locks lock, tea tree oil is anti-bacterial, -fungal, -microbial.
there are pics of several stages of my locks in the everyone's pic threads in the photo gallery - i cut them off about two months ago. here they are the night before (the pic is a little dark):
sigh, oh they were nice, weren't they? now they're in a sack under my bed... _________________ Caroline
